Tubing and other surprises in Laos By Rob Glassenbury

Me and my mate Craig were in the Asian backpacker party destination, tubing in Vang Vieng, Laos. We joined mainly young Irish and English in drinking games and ropes swings along the river.

After this big day we headed to a nightclub. I joined the crowd dancing on a podium. I was in my own little world when one of the locals grabbed my hand and danced with me. This seemed a bit too easy I thought. As I twirled her around, I looked up to see that the hand holding mine was massive. It was like a giant novelty hand you would see at the cricket. A little startled, I dropped the hand and headed over to mates.

Halfway through the story I was confronted by my local "friend". Clearly unimpressed with me letting the secret out of the bag I was given a sharp cross to the mouth. I was brought up not to punch girls and I would have been just as likely to lose this fight, so being a lover and not a fighter, I decided to move on and enjoy the rest of the night.

I woke up the morning after. Looked in the mirror to see that not only did I have a fat lip, but for the first time in my life, conjunctivitis, which was common in the area because of the quality of the water in the river. My mate Craig had not been spared injury either having stood on a chunk of glass the night before. That morning we travelled back to Thailand to meet our other mate Daniel. "Sh*t what happened to you", he said as Craig limped towards him and I followed behind sporting an eye patch and fat lip.
