I was travelling through Malaysia and heard through fellow travelers that the Perhentian Islands were worth a visit. I took a bus to Kuala Besut and then a boat out to the islands.
I arrived too late in the day so missed the last boat. The town seemed deserted so I went off to find a hostel. I stopped at the closest guest house to the boat jetty. Someone eventually came out to serve me and I was able to get a very basic room for the night. I was getting the 1st boat ride out in the morning so wasn't too fussed. I headed out to get an early dinner and there was a big storm coming so I decided to have an early night.
Sitting on my bed a man knocked on the door. "Miss would you like some roti?". "No, thank you" I said. He kept asking me another 4 or 5 times. I really didn't like the thought of any man coming into my room giving me food. He kept saying, "You must be hungry" and I kept saying no thank you and that I'd already eaten. He then asked if I wanted some water. I was getting worried by this stage because the storm had started and the rain and thunder was so loud that if he was able to get the door open - I had locked it thankfully - no one would have been able to hear me scream. The only thing I had on me was a pocket knife and I was holding that in front of me thinking I hope I get outta here alive! My heart was racing, and finally there was silence. He given up and I breathed a BIG sigh of relief!
I was outta there first thing in the morning.
PS - The Perhentian Islands were worth it though! I spent 5 days of absolute paradise on Earth. And that was the only blemish...
